About Igem

iGEM, short for the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition, is not a company in the traditional sense, but rather a nonprofit organization that hosts an annual synthetic biology competition for undergraduate and high school students. Founded in 2003 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), iGEM has grown into a global community of students, academics, and industry professionals interested in synthetic biology and its applications.

Each year, iGEM teams from around the world work on projects that involve designing, building, and testing genetically engineered systems. These projects aim to address various real-world challenges, such as healthcare, environmental sustainability, and industrial biotechnology. Participants have the opportunity to develop their scientific and engineering skills, collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds, and engage with experts in the field.

iGEM provides teams with access to a standard toolkit of biological parts, as well as training, mentorship, and resources to support their projects. The competition culminates in a Giant Jamboree where teams present their work, share their findings, and compete for awards.

Beyond the competition, iGEM fosters a community of innovation and collaboration through conferences, workshops, and networking events. Alumni of the program have gone on to pursue careers in academia, industry, and entrepreneurship, making significant contributions to the field of synthetic biology.

Overall, iGEM plays a crucial role in advancing the field of synthetic biology and inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges.
